What Happens Before Surgery?
Once you and your doctor determine that surgery is a necessary
part of your care, the complex scheduling process begins. A pre-operative
visit may be needed to review your physical examination. Many times,
you and your doctor have already spent considerable time reviewing
the surgical plan and only a short review physical examination would
be required in the immediate pre-operative interval. This examination
is often done by one of our skilled nurse practioners.
Every operation carries with it some degree of risk. We work in
the operating room regularly and are comfortable in that environment.
Our explanation of surgical problems and complications is not done
to frighten you. We want you to have a full understanding in order
to make a clear, rational and informed decision.
Part
of your pre-operative testing will be done at the hospital. Routine
blood work and occasionally a chest X-ray and EKG (heart tracing
done on more mature patients) are done. We also ask that you meet
with the anesthesia team to make that part of your care as smooth
as possible. If you have any special needs, allergies or medical
problems, be sure to mention them even if it seems repetitive.
It is important that you do not eat or drink for twelve (12)
hours prior to surgery. If this advice is not followed,
it may be necessary to cancel your surgery for safety reasons. Please
arrive at the hospital two hours before the actual time for surgery.
This allows the staff to get you ready in time for the procedure.
You will be given a written schedule as part of your personal surgery
papers. Please take time to read and understand each one.
Our objective is to make the surgery process as easy as possible.
The skilled scheduling and nursing staff are available to support
you throughout the experience. If any questions remain, feel free
to call and ask.
