The Ultrasound Services Team is an important part of the diagnostic
process at Asheville Women's Medical Center. These experienced technical
professionals use high-quality Siemens ultrasound equipment to complete
obstetrical, gynecological and breast imaging examinations.
Obstetrical
Ultrasound is a very helpful tool assisting your doctor indetermining
your baby's position, placental location and growth pattern. A single
ultrasound study is usually a regular part of your care, depending
on your insurance coverage. Your doctors advise that at least one
ultrasound examination be part of your prenatal review. This method
is a very useful way to calculate a more accurate due date. There
is something captivating for patients and their families to see
the new baby through the ultrasound pictures. Seeing your baby turing,
kicking, or moving arms and fingers is an unforgettable and reassuring
experience.
Gynecological Ultrasound is a non-X ray method to see the soft
tissue parts of your pelvis. It is a superior process for viewing
fluid-filled cysts in the ovaries. We use ultrasound to measure
uterine fibroids (leiomyomata), the thickness of the uterine lining.
By using ultrasound and placing fluid in the uterine cavity, we
are able to see more clearly inside the uterus to evaluate growths
such as polyps or fibroids. The ultrasound technique uses both abdominal
and vaginal probes to obtain the diagnostic images.
Breast
Ultrasound is a supporting diagnostic method for mammography.
We are often able to confirm that a lump in a breast is simply fluid-filled
and not a point of clinical worry. Ultrasound does not replace or
compete with mammography, but provides additional information to
help in making an accurate diagnosis. It can be also be used to
guide a diagnostic needle aspiration or core biopsy. This procedure
is done in real-time using a generous local anesthetic.
